DETAILED SPATIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Lobby
- Transition space adjacent to entrance where visitors can gather.
- Open to 1st floor mezzanine.
- Furnishings: signage, facility map, seating
Coffee Shop
- Space close to entrance to draw in the local business community.
- Furnishings: counter space, signage, refrigerators, sink, microwave, blender, mixer and other standard appliances, preparation/ counter space, chairs: 10-15, tables, storage cabinets and drawers
Art Studios (16)
- Space that doubles as rentable studio space and gallery space. Interior wall will be glass for displaying. Space will be open for people throughout the community to rent on a month to month basis.
- Needs to be close the main circulation path so that display space is easily accessible/ viewed and close to a private sink or a sink shared by all the art studios.
- Furnishings: sink, table, task lighting, seating
Galleries (3)
- The galleries utilize space on both the first floor and its mezzanine level
- The galleries can be utilized for public or private shows and will circulate through both local and visiting artists.
- Space needs to be semi close to the bathrooms.
- Furnishings: movable display space
Classrooms (4)
- These classrooms can be used for public meetings and classes offered to community members.
- Space needs to be semi close to the bathrooms.
- Furnishings: tables: 15, chairs: 30, storage
Learning Kitchen
- The space will be fully equipped and set up for classes and exhibitions. Weekly classes will be held and guest chefs will be invited in.
- Space needs to be somewhat detached for noise reasons.
- Furnishings: oven, refrigerators, sink, microwave, blender, mixer and other standard appliances, warming drawer, preparation/ counter space, display TVs: 2, 3?, chairs: 15, 20?, tables, storage cabinets and drawers
Administrative Offices
- A few administrative staff will be on hand during the week days to help organize the seamless flow of day to day activities. The office will serve as a place to pay rent, reserve studios and stages, to plan events and to conduct operational tasks.
- Space needs to be close to main entrance.
- Furnishings: desks: 3, chairs: 6-8, computers: 3, task lighting, overhead, shelves, guest chairs, tables, other standard office equipment
Restrooms (3 Men’s, 3 Women’s)
- This space needs to be centrally located and accessible from all spaces.
- Existing restrooms and plumbing walls will be utilized in Canal St. building.
- There will also be restrooms added in the park space.
- Both men’s and women’s restrooms on every floor of Canal St. building.
- Furnishings: sinks, 1st floor: 3 sinks in all bathrooms
1st floor mezzanine: 6 sinks in women’s bathroom, 7 sinks in men’s bathroom, toilets
1st floor: 6 stalls in women’s bathroom, 3 stalls, 3 urinals in men’s bathroom
1st floor mezzanine: 3 stalls in women’s bathroom, 4 stalls, 4 urinals in men’s bathroom, soap dispensers, hand dryers, counter space, partitions, grab bars, changing table, garbage disposal, mirrors
Storage
- The storage space will be essential for keeping equipment safe and secure.
- There needs to be storage throughout the facility.
- Furnishings: shelving, cabinets
Building Support
- Space to accommodate mechanical closets and trash/ recycling.
- Employee access only.
- Existing equipment to be used: HVAC, water heater
- Furnishings: shelving, mechanical equipment, existing, trash/ recycling receptacles
Janitor
- A place to keep equipment safe.
- The space needs to be centrally located on every floor.
- Employee access only.
- Furnishings: shelving, sink, mechanical equipment, supply and tool storage
Indoor Performance Space
- The space will be medium in size and will be available for the dance classes as well as the community to utilize.
- Space needs to be close the bathrooms and the dance studios.
- Furnishings: stage, seating: 30, 40?, lights, speakers, dressing area, curtain, set, costume and prop storage
Dance/ Theater Studios (7)
- Space can be rented out for dance and theater classes. The end users will be both the dance/ theater instructors and the students. Can be any sort of dance: ballet, jazz, tap, Latin, ballroom, Zydeco. And any type of theater.
- This space need to be close to the bathrooms and both the indoor and Black Box Theater. The space also needs to be fairly accessible to an entrance/ elevators.
- Furnishings: stereo system, ballet bar: on at least 2 of the walls, possibly some mobile ones as well, storage: somewhere for props to be stored from class to class
Black Box Theater
- Space will be utilized by the community and users of the dance and theater studios.
- This space is very simply painted black without any flourishes to that the actors and dancers can create the space.
- This space need to be close to the bathrooms and the dance/ theater studios. The space also needs to be fairly accessible to an entrance/ elevators.
- Furnishings: seating, storage: somewhere for props to be stored from class to class
Bathrooms/ Dressing Rooms (2 Men’s, 2 Women’s)
- This space needs to be close to the dance studios and both indoor and outdoor stages.
- Meant only to be used by performers.
- In Canal St. building, use existing space on 1st floor mezzanine and add another next to it, similar in size.
- There will also be bathrooms/ dressing rooms attached to the semi open-air stage.
- Furnishings: sinks- 6 existing, toilets- 6 existing, lockers, benches, soap dispensers, hand dryers, counter space, partitions, grab bars, changing table, garbage disposal, mirrors
Public Elevator
- This space needs to be centrally located and accessible from all spaces.
- Furnishings: 3 existing elevators
Service Elevator
- This space needs to be accessible from an exit near the art studios
- Furnishings: 2 existing elevators
Green Space
- This space is meant to be a place for the community to gather. There will be lots of open space for running around. The park space will work in conjunction with the open air-stage.
- This space needs to be adjacent to the open air-stage.
- Furnishings: open green space, trees, flowers, bushes, benches, lighting, security cameras, pathways, trashcans, water fountains
Semi Open-air Stage
- The space will provide a transition from the enclosed studios and kitchen to the park space. Like the indoor performance space, the open air-stage will be utilized by both the classes and the community. This space opens out to the park and will be great for concerts, festivals and parties.
- Space needs to be close to the bathrooms and needs to be connected to the park.
- Furnishings: stage, standing room and room for chairs, lights, speakers, dressing area, curtain, set, costume and prop storage
Three story seating and kiosk space
- The space will utilize the existing northeastern façade of the building across Iberville Street. The façade will taper down out from the corner.
- Utilizing the existing façade will provide extra security.
- The space will be utilized as concert venue seating as well as space for artists to set up kiosks to display and sell artwork on the weekends and at special events.
- The space will provide extra seating allowing for more stage viewing in the park.
- An elevator will run up and down as well as stairs.
- Furnishings: kiosks, display space, seating
Grounds Keeping
- A place to keep equipment safe and dry.
- The space needs to be located next to or in the public park.
- Employee access only.
- Furnishings: shelving, sink, mechanical equipment, supply and tool storage
